New Voice Coil Actuator from Geeplus Provides Multi-Axis Motion

Beckenham, UK – Geeplus has added a new, multi-axis voice coil actuator to its menu of world class actuation devices. Designed for the steering of optical beams, and ideally suited to the use of data transmission between tall buildings or other structures subjected to movement, the new VMXY80 voice coil actuator provides rotational deflection about two axes.

The moving element on the new voice coil actuator is supported on a steel flexure for frictionless movement and two coil pairs develop torque on the X or Y axis when energised. The torque provided by the actuator is proportional to the excitation current, which results in a deflection also proportional to the excitation current.

The new voice coil actuator has been designed in such a way that it is scalable, enabling the manufacture of smaller or larger moving coil devices with similar construction, subject to quantities being economically viable.

The 80mm diameter on this voice coil actuator however, is approaching the upper size limit for which radial magnets are available. Larger parts can be created using segmented magnets, and, in turn, may be more readily manufactured with a square footprint.

Although designed for a specific purpose – namely steering laser and light beams – the new VMXY80 voice coil actuator could have additional applications in industrial, military, or special effects lighting.
